Common Elements of Organic Modern Interiors:

NEUTRAL COLORS

Just don’t forget the contrast- this is such an easy mistake to make! People (myself included!) sometimes forget that even if you’re only using neutrals, you should still have a variety of shades within that neutral color palette. I think sometimes people want a bright, airy feeling space and they think that only decorating with light colors will help them achieve that. BUT a lack of contrast can actually make a room feel very dull and bland. You need to add in those darker shades to make the light shades really pop.

MIX OF ORGANIC/ EARTHY TEXTURES + MATERIALS

One thing that has helped me A LOT when decorating my own home, is making sure I pay attention to the different materials and textures I’m adding to a room. This applies to nearly all décor styles, but is especially important if you’re designing with mostly neutral colors.

Neutrals can quickly fall flat if everything is a similar texture. If you’re aiming for an Organic Modern aesthetic, you’ll want to include a lot of organic/Earthy textures such as: wood, rattan, wicker, pottery, linen, wool, leather, and even greenery (real or faux). Don’t forget to add in some metal or glass pieces as well, to keep everything from feeling too “visually heavy”.

BALANCE OF TRADITIONAL + MODERN PIECES

The last thing you’ll notice in these spaces, is they all have a great balance of modern and more traditional/ slightly rustic pieces. For example: in the design below (by Amber Interiors), a modern sofa is paired with a beautiful, traditional style end table.

Another way to achieve this is by mixing new and vintage décor. Combining old and new accessories helps create a space that feels more personal, and is both contemporary and timeless.

You can see in the photo below how I combined newer pieces with vintage ones that I thrifted. I love mixing in thrifted décor to create a look that’s unique to me! By sticking to a color palette, the design still ends up looking cohesive and intentional.
