Interior Design Trends I've Noticed in 2019 & Some Predictions for 2020

Some interior design/decor trends seem to pop up quickly and out of nowhere (hello fiddle leaf figs), while others happen more slowly over time (Turkish rugs). I definitely love seeing what others predict will become a trend, but I also love looking back at all of the photos I’ve saved throughout the year and picking out the similarities… and how the type of design I’m drawn to has evolved.

I went through all of the Instagram posts and Pinterest images I’ve been saving lately, and was able to pick out a few trends I’ve seen popping up more and more. I’m also using those trends to make a couple of predictions for possible future trends! Keep reading and let me know if you’ve noticed the same things!

1 ) TABLE LAMPS ON KITCHEN COUNTERS

This is definitely one I’ve seen popping up on Instagram more and more in the last couple of months - and I say, if you have the space then go for it! I think it gives both of the spaces above a more “homey” feel. If you love the look but you’re short on counter space, Target has been coming out with super cute mini lamps that I think would look great!

2 ) GLASS FRONT DISPLAY CABINETS

I’m not saying that open shelving is out of style (I don’t think that will ever happen!), but glass cabinets have definitely become more popular this past year! I personally love the more modern take on them - they’re almost like the china cabinets that all of our parents probably had when we were growing up… but with minimal and clean lines. Today’s glass cabinets are also decorated with more casual decor- no longer reserved for just holiday China!

3 ) BLACK MARBLE / BLACK WOOD FURNITURE

Black furniture is another home decor trend I’ve been noticing a lot more lately. I feel like lighter tones used to be everywhere, and while I don’t think those are going anywhere… I think mixing in darker pieces is a great way to add more contrast and interest to your space. Black marble accent pieces, a beautiful black wood grain dining table, or black leather chairs will instantly transform any space!

4 ) PREDICTION: ANTIQUED HARDWARE

Antique - or antique looking - hardware is something that I think more and more people are going to start including in their designs. Brushed/satin brass & matte black have pretty much been the go to picks for hardware for years now, and I think people are ready for something different. If you’re in the category, some other options you can search for are: antique brass, oil rubbed bronze, iron, marble, antique copper, pewter, and unlacquered brass. Unlacquered brass starts off shiny, but since it is unfinished, it develops a beautiful patina over time. It takes about 6 months for unlacquered brass to lose it’s shininess, and about 2 years to fully patina.

5 ) PREDICTION: CURVED FURNITURE

Truthfully, people have predicting that curved furniture would take off for a few years now so I’m not calling this prediction my own. But I do have a feeling that people will be more ready to embrace it in the next year! I’ve definitely noticed more big box stores coming out with more mellow versions of this trend - in accent chairs and other smaller furniture. If you’re not ready for a full on rounded sofa like in the images above, you can opt for a smaller love seat, chair, or even sculptural side table!

6 ) PREDICTION: TEXTURED WALLS

I promise, I’m not just including this because I chose to use grasscloth wallpaper in my One Room Challenge space.. :) I actually do think we’re going to start seeing more people utilize beautiful grasscloth, or other natural textured wallpaper in their spaces. I personally picked it because I thought my powder room needed something more special than a fun paint color, but I also wanted to make sure I picked something that I wouldn’t get sick of in 6 months. I think grasscloth is a perfect way to add texture and interest, while still keeping a classic look. Plus, it comes in a variety of beautiful colors and shades so you’re bound to find something that works for you!

That’s all of the trends and predictions I have for now! I’m excited to see if these home decor trends become more popular in the coming months!
