How to Style a Console Table

I’m back with another styling guide! This time, it’s a quick and easy breakdown of how to decorate a console table. The “formula” for console styling is almost the same as shelf styling. So if you can master one, you should be able to master both!

STEP ONE / Start by anchoring your table to the space (if there is a large wall behind it) with a large piece of art or a mirror. I found different opinions for how big this piece should be - 2/3 the size of your console table, a few inches narrower than your table, etc… basically, just make sure it’s big but not bigger than the table itself. Also be sure to hang it at the correct height - see my guide to hanging art here.

STEP TWO / Add in some height with a vase of branches or greenery. Don’t be afraid of tall branches - I LOVE the drama they add to a space! You can also add height with things like candlesticks, sculptures, or even vases/jars without greenery or branches.

STEP THREE / Layer in some more decorative pieces (books, bowls, baskets, smaller vases, etc). Putting items on top of stacked books is always a great way to add height when something is too small. When adding these things, try dividing your console into 2 or 3 sections. Then group your objects within those sections- pay attention to height, texture, & color. You want everything to feel connected and intentional - versus cluttered or “floating” objects.

STEP FOUR / Finish off your styling by adding some balance - the tall, dark candlesticks balance out the height of the branches and tie in with the black vase.

THAT’S IT! Now enjoy your beautifully styled console table!!
