LOOKING BACK ON 2017 DESIGN PREDICTIONS

Back in January, I wrote a post on a previous blog about the design trends predicted to be big during the year.  I wanted to touch back and see what actually came true and what didn't really make the cut!

OLIVE TREES: After over a year of everyone showing off their beautiful fiddle leaf fig trees, olive trees were supposed to become the new indoor plant of choice.  However, 2017 was still full of fiddle leaf fig plants.  Hopefully in 2018 everyone will be ready to switch it up!

PANTONE GREENERY: Pantone named Greenery their 2017 color of the year and I had expected to see it everywhere this year!  While I definitely saw a few more accents in green, I don't think it became an overwhelming trend like everyone made it out to be.

STATEMENT LIGHTING: YES.  This is by far my favorite!  Lighting is continuing to evolve from boring ceiling fan lights and recessed lighting to beautiful chandeliers and pendants.  There are even gorgeous options for flush mount lights!!  This is one easy way to dramatically update or change the look in a room.

TEXTURE: Chunky knit blankets had just started becoming big towards the end of 2016, and now you can find everything from pillows to poufs in a variety of beautiful textures.  I'd say this trend is definitely here to stay.

BLACK STEEL DOORS & WINDOWS: This is definitely a trend that I'm seeing more and more of.  Black steel is such a dramatic way to make your windows, patio doors, or even shower doors stand out.  In my opinion, I believe we'll continue to see more of this in 2018.

BUTCHER BLOCK COUNTERTOPS: It was predicted that people would start to warm up their all white kitchens with butcher block countertops and I believe this is a trend that is still growing.  Especially for the top of a kitchen island.  It's a great way to add visual interest, while also being cost effective.

One trend I was hoping to see but sadly did not was terracotta tiles.  There's always next year though!
